With a pair of binoculars, I was able to see Sutherland to the west as a dot on the horizon. Despite using a telephoto lens, I was not able to capture it on film, but it is located exactly in the center of the frame. The Platte River and I-80 are located in the valley from left to right.
While eastern Nebraska's topography is similar to much of the midwest corn belt, the Sand Hills dominate most of western Nebraska. They are mostly sand dunes covered with naturally occuring grass. Because the
Transconinental Railroad, the original coast-to-coast Lincoln Highway (US 30), and I-80 were constructed down in the Platte River valley across much of Nebraska, most travellers do not see these vistas.
